Getting a tooth pulled isn’t fun, but sometimes an extraction is necessary to prevent further complications. For expert extractions, see Jacob Ming, DDS, at Heritage Dental in Hayward, California. Permanent teeth are built to last a lifetime, but for many reasons, some teeth might not. For example, you might need to have a tooth extracted because it's too cracked or chipped to repair. Lifestyle choices, trauma, and decay can all lead to needing a tooth pulled.
Extractions may be necessary for other reasons, including:
There are two types of extractions: a simple extraction and a surgical extraction. Simple extractions are just like they sound. They're simple! Simple extractions are performed on teeth that can be seen in your mouth. During this type of procedure, Dr. Ming at Heritage Dental loosens your tooth with a small instrument and lifts it out with dental forceps.
A surgical extraction is more involved. The tooth may be broken off close to the gumline or hasn't yet grown through the gum line, which is typical of wisdom teeth. During a surgical extraction, Dr. Ming makes a little cut into the gum to locate and take out the tooth in question.
Sometimes the tooth needs to be sectioned, or cut into smaller pieces, to be removed. It may also be necessary to remove some of the bone around the affected tooth.
Dr. Ming gives you a local anesthetic before both a surgical extraction and simple extraction, so you don’t feel any pain. If you're having a couple of teeth removed at one appointment, as is the norm with wisdom teeth removal, he might give you a general anesthetic. You'll feel no pain and will sleep through the procedure.
Depending on how many teeth you had extracted and your specific circumstances, the first stages of the healing process usually occur within one or two weeks. New bone and gum tissue grow in the spaces where your teeth used to be. As your healing progresses, you might feel discomfort and soreness or have problems chewing, based on the invasiveness of your dental procedure.
Because everyone's circumstances are different, it’s best to contact Heritage Dental and book a consultation to find out about your options in addition to any important post-procedure treatments such as dental implants or crowns.
