Root Canals Q & A

Do I need a root canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure intended to remove oral discomfort and restore your tooth. Dr. Ming at Heritage Dental eliminates the bacteria and any dead or dying tissue from inside your tooth if it becomes severely infected. This way, he can save your tooth and help ease your pain.

How can the root of a tooth become infected?

From damage to the tooth or from a cavity allowed to go untreated, roots and tissue within your teeth can become infected with bacteria. If you don’t visit the dentist, the infected tissue may spread into the root or pulp of the tooth. If the infection develops any further this can lead to many other issues, so make sure you seek help.

What are the symptoms of an infected tooth?

An infected tooth can become very painful relatively quickly, especially if you don’t take care of it promptly. Some typical symptoms of an infected tooth include:

  • Inflamed gums
  • Tooth soreness when eating and drinking
  • Intense tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Halitosis
  • Pus coming from around the tooth
  • Painful throbbing in your mouth or jaw
  • Darkening color of the tooth
  • A small pimple-like bump on your gum

How does a root canal work?

Dr. Ming can usually fix your tooth within one or two visits. You may first need X-rays so he can judge the magnitude of damage to the tooth needing a root canal.

At your appointment, Dr. Ming utilizes a syringe to administer local anesthetic and numb the region. Occasionally, he sticks a small layer of rubber, or dental dam, around the tooth to safeguard it and keep it sanitary throughout the process. Once your tooth is anesthetized, Dr. Ming forms a minuscule hole in your tooth to reach the diseased area within the root.

After this, Dr. Ming uses small files to remove the damaged and diseased pulp and irrigates the area with water to wash away any debris. Once all the infected material is removed, he either seals the tooth or puts in a temporary filling to protect your tooth until you come back for a permanent crown.
